Between this and the docker desktop bs we're talking about moving around a thousand apple laptop purchases a year over to Linux.
- neom 5y agoJust as a reference point. Apple sells approx 2,200 macs an hour.
- pshirshov 5y agoYes, sure. Probably they won't notice anyone leaving. That's not a reason not to leave though.
- SV_BubbleTime 5y agoThat seems crazy from the production side. Think of what it would look like to manufacture 2,200+ macs per hour (19,000,000 year).
- dharmab 5y agoPre-pandemic, Ford sold a pickup truck on average once every 30 seconds.
- frockington1 5y agooff topic but post-pandemic my Bronco still doesn't have a build date, this chip shortage is out of hand
- SV_BubbleTime 5y agoYou have no idea. I just got a 100 week factory lead time for a cortex m4 ARM chip… it’s not a super rare chip.
- godelski 5y agoA year later and Ampere GPUs are still near impossible to get. So much for my home ML machine... (literally only waiting on a GPU and been that way for a year)
- katbyte 5y agoapple sold 18 million macs in 2018
- dividedbyzero 5y agoApparently they sold 6 million Macs in Q2 [1] 6M/91d/24h is about 2700 units per hour, if those numbers from statista are true. 1: https://www.statista.com/statistics/263444/sales-of-apple-mac-computers-since-first-quarter-2006/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/263444/sales-of-apple-ma...
- propogandist 5y agodon't worry, they're offsetting environmental harm by excluding chargers and other accessories from your purchase. You can pay more to get these items, because that's Apple's commitment to the 'environment'.
- abestic9 5y agoThat affects iPhones not Macs, but there is actually an environmental benefit in the form of shipment density due to the omission. It makes sense to not ship chargers to most people who already have a way of charging their new phone.
- lugged 5y agoI get it, but we're not going to do it to make them sad. We'll be doing it because their product sucks.
- neom 5y agoFor sure, I wasn't taking a swipe at you, it's fair! I was just giving the reference point.
- xrobledo84 5y agoWhat is going on with Docker?
- headmelted 5y agoJust going to assume this is due to how the hypervisor on macOS won't allow dynamic memory allocation to the runtime. On a Mac, you need to allocate a fixed amount of RAM to Docker, which isn't the case on other platforms where it can dynamically allocate and release as much as your containers demand. It's very painful in workloads that need Docker. Especially on MacBooks where you can't upgrade the RAM to compensate.
- dharmab 5y agoYour assumption is incorrect. This is about Docker Inc starting to charge money for Docker Desktop: https://www.docker.com/blog/updating-product-subscriptions/ https://www.docker.com/blog/updating-product-subscriptions/
- headmelted 5y agoIt certainly was. Yikes.
- codys 5y agohttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28369570 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28369570 (while on linux one can use the docker command line tool without any docker desktop thing, on mac docker desktop wraps together running a linux vm to run the docker daemon & containers inside, making it the most straight forward way of running docker on mac)
- mnd999 5y agoDocker desktop for Linux is coming. They’ve already said so. Your boss is going to end up paying for Docker. Giving your security department the ability to restrict what images you can pull is going to become a checkbox in your infosec audit.
- dharmab 5y agoOn Linux you don't need Docker at all. You can use containerd directly (or via alternative tooling such as CRI-O or Podman). Kubernetes has already deprecated the Docker APIs and uses OCI APIs to spawn containers. https://opencontainers.org/ https://opencontainers.org/
- mnd999 5y agoOf course you can, Docker’s play here is not about what’s technically possible. It’s about what they can convince your IT / infosec team to block.
- nickjj 5y ago> Docker desktop for Linux is coming. They’ve already said so. I can't officially say how Docker will implement DD on Linux but I have a hunch it will be optional. If it's not optional then it means you will need to install DD on your servers to run Docker which I can't realistically see happening. I'm guessing DD on Linux will just provide a few quality of life enhancements that exist on Windows and Mac, such as the host.docker.internal address and a UI for certain things for the folks who prefer that.
- heavyset_go 5y agoYou can just run Docker natively on Linux, no need for Docker Desktop.
- ulzeraj 5y agoJust proxy or mirror a curated list of docker images to your internal registry?
- istingray 5y agoHell yes!!!! Consider System76, one of the few Linux-focused vendors. Their tech support is great. Not sure the scale is a match for them, 1,000 is a lot of laptops. But Linux is a side project for Dell and Lenovo. They put up with it but don't really support it. Support a vendor who is all in on Linux.
- ubermonkey 5y agoHow's fit and finish on those? Build quality is a big deal. I feel like the midline for PC makers is pretty low -- Dell has mostly been kinda trashy, though the XPS machines have a good feel to them (it's a shame they've been kind of lemony for us). Absent the keyboard kerfluffle, Apple's build quality has traditionally been very high -- IME, on par with the IBM-era ThinkPads in the sense that the hardware lasts longer than technical viability. How is S76 here?
- mrtranscendence 5y agoI've not used a System76 laptop, but I had a coworker who used them for a long while. He never had particularly kind things to say about the polish. I'm overall not too impressed by what I see on their website; I really want a higher-res display at least. The coworker did eventually move to a Mac, but has recently expressed dissatisfaction and may move back to Linux. Not sure if that'll be with a System76 machine, though.
- ubermonkey 5y agoDid s/he say what was annoying about the Mac to them? (I'm not trying to argue. I'm always curious.)
- istingray 5y agoLemur Pro: Fit and finish is a A- for PCs (B compared to a Mac) Solid build, no super weird stuff on the Lemur Pro. The silkscreen for one of the USB ports says 3.1 but it's 3.2. The webcam has a little lip. Trackpad is pretty clickey (ive been used to apple synthetic click)
