This technology could have led to the arrests of hardcore criminals and spared some poor children a very difficult life. Well now we know where this generations priorities and values stand.
- vnchr 5y agoWe could just imprison everyone and prevent all future crime… Valuing and prioritizing privacy is not advocating for crimes against children.
- yomly 5y agoas a criminal you can just opt out of Apple hardware, and/or implement separately encrypted content. Better - maintain your facade of having an Apple device for your daytime phone and use a burner by night. Has DRM really stopped piracy? All this did was make it more annoying for criminals and maybe make it easier to catch dumb criminals - who would have been caught by other means anyway.
- roamerz 5y agoPrivacy doesn’t seem to matter to you. What happens when Apple adds brainwave detection to their Airpods? Now all I have to do is have a fleeting thought about something that is deemed unacceptable by the ruling class and the authorities show up and arrest me. So in your perfect little world where do you draw the line? Is it there or the next logical step where AI deems that based on it’s algorithm you are going to break some law tomorrow and now they are going to preemptively take action? Privacy matters.
- threshold 5y agoThat’s science fiction nonsense. You let us know when the shuttle lands then we’ll talk about human trafficking.
- nullc 5y agoFacebook makes 20 million reports a year, yet very few cases are filed. Worse-- this system only would detect old widely circulated images. Arguably, it may increase the incentive to create undetectable novel imagery for closed circulation, creating new instances of abuse in the process. Police making random nighttime sweeps of homes in your community would also likely catch some serious criminals. Our decisions have to be based on more than just the potential of a narrow benefit. It's not sufficient to reduce one ill in the world if the result is a world less worth living in overall.
- stjohnswarts 5y agoNot true. Those people would just have encrypted it before it ever hit their iphone. They're not stupid. This was a blatant attempt to soften the blow of apple acting as a spy for the government on your phone. If that isn't far scarier than "think of the children" then I don't know what is.
- threshold 5y agoActually they’re pretty stupid. Look at what they’re doing. Not exactly an intellectual pursuit. And if Apple implements their system it will catch many, many offenders and yes - it might save some children. When did taking care of our children become an afterthought? You’re more worried about Apple looking through your phone than letting these nuts walk around the community?
- stjohnswarts 5y agoYou really don't know what you're talking about facebook sends tons of CSAM violations the number that are actually looked into are on the order of (10's out 100's of thousands of reports). This is clearly the government getting around the 4th amendment by proxy. You can call it whatever you like but it's a total invasion of privacy to gain little or no security. It's 1984 levels of dystopian. Under your thought regime this should be extended to all documents scanned for any thought crimes. Wouldn't we all be safer if we do that? Why do we even have a Bill of Rights as they're just keeping the police from doing their job of saving the children and keeping us all safe.
