When I was learning to program, like probably others here, I didn't have anyone around me who knew anything about computers so was generally on my own until my first job and had to dig through stack traces and read error messages and had to try and figure out what was wrong. Kind of a blessing and a curse as I imagine my rate would have been a quicker and I wouldn't have hit so many brick walls but I learned to debug independently.
