I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the dessert. Near them, on the goo,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, editor of engines of creations:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level protein-goo stretch far away."

- taneq 5y agoI'm gonna be super impressed if any custom goo outcompetes the incumbent goo with 3+ billion years of wins under its belt.
- plutonorm 5y agoand yet mrna vaccines completely sidestep the immune system. We can break out of local minima just by the fact that we are coming at the problem of organism design from a different perspective.
- BizarroLand 5y agoThere was a time period on earth (the Carboniferous period) where there was an immense amount of oxygen in the air and trees didn't break down, this is what allowed dinosaurs to grow so large. Then fungi and bacteria appeared that could feed on lignin and cellulose and changed the world. If it happened once it could happen again. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/the-fantastically-strange-origin-of-most-coal-on-earth https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/the-fanta...
- taneq 5y agoThat's more like a config file for the existing, absolutely incredible, immune system sported by humans. Remember we can't even build a working single-celled organism yet (taking a natural organism and knocking genes out until you find a minimum viable set doesn't count.)
