Glad I dumped cloud and self host. $200/month plus fixed capital costs for a bit of rack space and equipment. With kubernetes, nix, and open source aws replacements, I'm paying less and have way more room for scalability.
In my own experience, I am glad more and more social media are silencing conservative voices. We get to move to newer platforms where we don't need to put up with the brigading. Eventually the old ones will go the way of myspace.
I see Amazon web services going the same way.
- kragen 5y agoIt's only a matter of time until your rack space provider feels pressure to enforce similar rules. Instead of looking to Kubernetes, Nix, and OpenStack, you should be looking to Tor, Bitcoin, and BitTorrent. Silencing voices is generally a big part of what conservatism is all about: in order to securely establish inherited privileges, it must silence whoever credibly criticizes them.
- djrogers 5y ago> Silencing voices is generally a big part of what conservatism is all about The same can be said for the modern Marxist movement, progressivism, and the social justice movement. Trying to paint the loss of liberty and liberalism as the fault of only one of the two big political parties is folly.
- kragen 5y agoI agree, but the parent was talking about conservatism, not Marxism or progressivism, and I didn't want to degrade the conversation with whataboutism. I've elaborated on that theme at greater length in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28401596 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28401596.
- cblconfederate 5y agothere 's a lot more competition on the rack space though, they are not limited to a cartel of 3
- inglor_cz 5y agoSilencing voices is generally a big part of what power is all about. It is a remarkably culturally and historically universal phenomenon. Critics of governments have been brutalized since the start of written records. It is also remarkable that anywhere where the punishment isn't immediate death or concentration camp, some people will try to push back against silencing of other people, even at a risk to themselves.
- iammisc 5y agoWith a rack provider I can federate over multiple data centers. I'm currently working on wireless mesh networks to get rid of this dependency too. Goal is to create a separate network for people who share my politics
- iammisc 5y agoEuropean conservatism and american conservatism is different. America was founded on ideals progressive to most Europeans at the time. To be conservative in america means to have progressive ideals but not woke ones. In other words moderate.
- kragen 5y agoThat's Newspeak. The words you're using have actual meanings, but you are failing to respect them, and so your comment came out completely devoid of meaning.
- cblconfederate 5y agoSocial media is the new TV. Cool for the boomers and their kids, but the next generation is shaking their heads in disbelief.

- fred_is_fred 5y agoAWS is going away because someone took down an ISIS website? That's a bold claim that borders on free speech absolutist fantasy land.
- iammisc 5y agoAws is going away because it takes down normal american websites like parler catering to american citizens and it's an american company.
