We are living in America
Amerika ist wunderbar
We are living in America
Amerika, Amerika
- trutannus 5y agoEnglish isn't an American language, it's an English language, from the English Commonwealth; former British colonies, which America once was. There's a significant number of non American nations who use it as a first language. See any commonwealth nation for instance. It would be more correct to say: We're all living in the United Kingdom.
- Hamuko 5y agoAmerica is definitely the exporter of English to the rest of the world. People are learning English by watching American movies and TV shows, listening to American music and playing American video games.
- trutannus 5y agoNow, perhaps. But that's a recent development, really only over the past 50-100 years. English language hegemony predates that. Prior to the very recent development of American cultural export, English was propagated around the world by England and their colonization. In fact, it's more accurate to say that English colonization enabled the United States to export its culture in the first place. Views like yours are exemplars of Americentrism.
- Symbiote 5y agoI think you should be much more cautious before making a generalization like that. People also watch British films and TV shows (Harry Potter, James Bond, Dr Who, Peppa Pig), listen to British music (Ed Sheeran, Adele, Little Mix), and play British video games (GTA, Tomb Raider). I think it's probably under 50% of the market in non-English-speaking countries on average, but could be the majority in some countries with closer past or present associations to the UK.
- Hamuko 5y agoHarry Potter is probably the biggest exception, but American cinema is the vast majority of movies. If I now go look at the foreign films that are being shown here, there are 18 films that originate from the US and 5 films that originate from the UK based on IMDB details. And three of those films were actually credited to both the UK and the US. Peppa Pig also is probably the worst example of people learning English from the British since you are not watching Peppa Pig in English unless you already live in an English-speaking country. It's a children's show, it's dubbed absolutely everywhere since children can't read subtitles. And even though the GTA games are technically British games, they all take place in the United States, they are written to have (satirical) American dialogue and are pretty much fully acted out by Americans. Even European characters named Niko and Roman are voiced by American dudes named Michael and Jason. Also, all of the new Tomb Raider games are actually American/Canadian productions.
- midasuni 5y ago“There are even places, where English completely disappears. Why, in America, they haven't spoken it for years”
- bsd44 5y agoYou missed the point entirely. I'm talking about globalisation which is in fact an export of Anglo-American culture hiding under the label of economic integration. The quote is from a song by the famous German band Rammstein.
- trutannus 5y agoI'm aware that's a Rammstein song, however American (Anglo-American does not mean what you appear to think it does) culture has little do do with the fact that English is on the list of most spoken languages. The reason for this stems back far before signal transmission was able to deliver the global audience. It comes from colonization by the English, and them installing English government, and as a consequence importing English folk into the territories. This is nothing more than Americentrism.
