My hope is that effects like these that turn up the heat - so to speak - will finally allow this to break through to the general public: we're at the brink of an existential crisis.
For most people it's still business-as-usual. But time is running out. I'm actually a bit relieved that all the worst-case milestones are being hit years in advance - it just demonstrates how very conservative the simulations are in regard to the impact they predict.
Can we now stop pretending that the planet isn't on fire, please?

- Clubber 5y agoCarbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption in the United States from 1975 to 2020: https://www.statista.com/statistics/183943/us-carbon-dioxide-emissions-from-1999/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/183943/us-carbon-dioxide... It's been going down since 2008. Our emissions are mid-80s level and we have over 50% larger population than we had then. That's not click worthy though; doesn't generate enough fear.

- lnxg33k1 5y agoToo bad climate can't read this reply, maybe it would stop being a drama queen
- esarbe 5y agoAwesome! We've solved climate change for the USA. Join in the chant everyone! https://www.statista.com/statistics/264699/worldwide-co2-emissions/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/264699/worldwide-co2-emi... Oh, dang! It seems we're still spewing out tons of CO2 on a global scale. Well, at least the temperatures are stable. That's good to know. Oh, wait! https://www.statista.com/topics/1148/global-climate-change/ https://www.statista.com/topics/1148/global-climate-change/ (https://www.kobeemanatee.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Manatee-News-CC-8-17-2017.png https://www.kobeemanatee.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Mana... I prefer this one. I think it makes a better point.) What?! We're already at ~1°C over the statistically high average of the 20th century? That's not good news. I thought we wanted to keep it below 1.5°C to, you know keep part of the planet habitable? Well, at least the birds and the bees are still alright. https://www.somersetwildlife.org/sites/default/files/2020-09/AFI%20full%20schools%20pack_L.pdf https://www.somersetwildlife.org/sites/default/files/2020-09... What? We've lost about 60% of insect biomass in only the last 30 years and about 75% of bird biomass? That cannot be good. Well at least we still have enough foodstuff to eat. There's no need to worry while we have enough to - https://www.un.org/press/en/2019/gaef3519.doc.htm https://www.un.org/press/en/2019/gaef3519.doc.htm Dang! If you really are of the opinion that there's no problem; I'm very impressed by your continued power of self-deception. I often wonder how people do that. And honestly; I wish I could do the same. But once you left the cave, there's no going back, you know. I guess that's why many are afraid to do so.
- Clubber 5y ago>>It's been going down since 2008. Our emissions are mid-80s level and we have over 50% larger population than we had then. That's not click worthy though; doesn't generate enough fear. >If you really are of the opinion that there's no problem That's quite a hysterical response to what I actually wrote. I quoted it so you can reread it with a more level head. If you think flipping out on Internet forums will in any way change anything, you're mistaken.
- esarbe 5y agoWell, since your first reply didn't acknowledged that there's a problem and instead even downplayed any need for action, hysterical laughter seems to be the appropriate response. I fail to understand how rational persons - like you yourself seem to be one - can treat the calamity we're facing with such a dismissive non-nonchalance. This wonderful, weird, exciting place we're all living in is going to crumble very soon. You do understand that, right?
- Clubber 5y ago>downplayed any need for action Show me where I downplayed need for action. >with such a dismissive non-nonchalance Show me where I dismissed climate change. I'll quote it again for you for reference. >>It's been going down since 2008. Our emissions are mid-80s level and we have over 50% larger population than we had then. That's not click worthy though; doesn't generate enough fear. Also, see if you can find an article in the NYT that talks about how we've significantly lowered our carbon emissions in the US that doesn't explain it away as due to covid. I tried and couldn't find any. NYT doesn't want to show you the US is making pretty good progress in our carbon emissions; the NYT wants to scare the shit out of you at all times because it's the best way to generate revenue.
- esarbe 5y ago> Show me where I downplayed need for action. >> It's been going down since 2008. Our emissions are mid-80s level and we have over 50% larger population than we had then That's pretty downplaying, at least to my reading. To me, it says "There's nothing that we need doing, because we're already back in the 80ies!". That we've been able to reduce emissions is a tiny glimmer of hope, at best. Not some laurels to be proud of. > That's not click worthy though; doesn't generate enough fear. This - again; in my reading - dismisses the devastating and live-threatening consequences of ecosystem destruction to nothing more than a frenzy whipped up by the media. > the NYT wants to scare the shit out of you at all times because it's the best way to generate revenue. See, there again. You know, I want people to be fearful of climate change. Not because I'm selling newspaper or because I get money from advertisement clicks. I want people to be scared to death of climate change because that's the only rational response to the calamity we're in. Our ecosystem is dying and I'll be very surprised if humanity's global society makes it to the 22st century mark. The problem with grasping climate change (and the ecosystem destruction we're wrecking with our predatory exploitation of it) is that its consequences are somewhat in the future. Thirty, forty, fifty years. Individuals are not good at dealing with such time frames and thus our actions are inadequate. People are very, very, very bad at evaluating such probabilities. Our monkey brains are just not good at it and even though it might seem that we are rational creatures; we're everything but. We humans operate on emotions. I want people to be afraid of climate change and ecosystem collapse because honestly it's the biggest danger we're currently facing. It's no time for business-as-ususal. Business-as-usual will wreck our global society and every ounce of living standard we've had for the last 200 years. Do you enjoy your daily hot shower? Enjoy it good, you probably belong to one of the first and last generations of mankind to have ever known it. > we've significantly lowered our carbon emissions in the US Yeah, that's not significantly. That's barely enough for a passing grade, if even that. It's time to accept this and start acting like we're facing a global calamity of unprecedented scale. Because we are.
