Well, this resonates with myself ( sorry, I know ).
I am Dutch and in NL, but acquired an 'original' Trump 2016 MAGA shirt ( a friend brought it from the US ).
I am not pro-Trump, but also not anti-Trump, while normal civilized discourse in my town of 'progressives' is Orange man bad. I enjoy the apparent tension the whole subject seems to generate.
I proudly wear the shirt, which is seen as brave by my friends : it could get me in trouble, but I am a big, assertive guy.
The shirt makes people speak up who would have never spoken up given the climate. Some are pro-Trump and some are not anti-Trump, some are US citizens. It definetly brings out the dynamic you are referring to.
Well, there, I said it.
- trainsplanes 5y agoI’m American and most certainly not pro-Trump. That said, I’ve thought Make America Great Again hats were hilarious since day one. I’ve wanted to get one and wear it, but I know that doing that is taken as a strong sign of endorsement for him and various other things, and it sets some people off into a rage. Can’t wait until a decade from now when it hopefully settles down and they’re just goofy pieces of vintage wear.
- csa 5y agoMy very liberal friend thought the same thing… so he just got one written in Russian. The reactions are pretty hilarious.
- the-dude 5y agoWhich makes me think of this USSR joke : https://bestjokehub.com/joke-115890/ https://bestjokehub.com/joke-115890/ The 80s, an American and a Russian are arguing about which country has more freedom. The American says, “I can walk right up to the White House and shout 'Down with Reagan!' and nothing bad will happen to me.” The Russian replies, “Guess what? I can walk in front of Kremlin and shout 'Down with Reagan!' and nothing will happen to me either.”
- allendoerfer 5y agoI would be against your shirt, not because I am against Trump. I think wearing your own country‘s flag or mainstream political symbols is already questionable. I think you should not define yourself through a group. It might be cute for non-dominant sports teams or cities. Walking around with Bayern Munich/Barcelona/I <3 NY and the like when you are not even close to those cities, just makes you look like a weak person following the currently popular kids. Wearing US symbols in Europe is outright stupid. You are not part of that group. You are effectively marketing for a competitor of a group you cannot switch. It is beyond me why you would put symbols of the leading military power into pop-culture. Sounds pretty Orwellian to me.
- the-dude 5y agoWell, apparently the shirt works as well online as offline. People immediately, spontanously spill their guts about their convictions. Thanks for sharing.
- allendoerfer 5y agoUpvoted you, because I get how my point might have come across, even though you just described how online forums work.
- the-dude 5y ago> just described how online forums work. I guess you have a point here, because you wouldn't call me weak in my face. To respond to your term from a sibling comment, about arbitrarily join winning teams : I got and wore the Trump shirt well before his election. Furthermore, what is wrong about being a Barcelona supporter from Germany ( for example ) if you just like and adore their style / spiel ?
- allendoerfer 5y agoI would have put you more in the third category of American symbolism. So if any, I called wearing it stupid, not weak. But even there it does not fit perfectly. I do not think wearing MAGA in Europe is in any way joining a popular group. Becoming a Barcelona supporter in recent times is definitely joining the winning team. I think there is a difference between recognizing someone’s qualities and actually joining a movement. Just buying a Barca shirt to me is not the same level as actually being a member of a club, watching the home-games live, because that’s where your community is at. It feels more like wearing a Rolling Stones shirt without ever having visited a concert. And that to me just seems like blindly following a popular group. (I make pointed arguments, obviously there are exceptions to everything.)
- rtpg 5y agoBeing confused about why wearing a political statement makes people believe you are supporting that statement is quite a feat!
