FWIW I've used "live" Linux distros running from a USB 3.0 flash drive stick (non-USB Type-C) on a variety of hardware and it was entirely "usable" if not ideal

FWIW I've used "live" Linux distros running from a USB 3.0 flash drive stick (non-USB Type-C) on a variety of hardware and it was entirely "usable" if not ideal in terms of performance. (At least as a short term thing.)
So I would imagine non-stick drives would work okay.
