How much Open Source projects might have spent if not for GitHub Actions?
- blueplanet200 5y agoWhat is this, if “time taken” was a minimum wage job? This analysis seems weird…
- amrrs 5y ago>time_taken = the total time spent on github actions per project. i only have a few days of data so the average time spent per day is used to extrapolate to the future on how much it costs per year to run CI on that project. That was a comment from the author on that thread

- verdverm 5y agothe cost per hour seems way to high at >$10 those free runners have specs that would come in under $0.10 for a cloud VM and Microsoft's cost is well below the sticker price. I would conservatively divide these by 100
- verdverm 5y agohttps://docs.github.com/en/billing/managing-billing-for-github-actions/about-billing-for-github-actions https://docs.github.com/en/billing/managing-billing-for-gith... GHA sticker price would be >20x cheaper for linux, >10x for windows.
- jka 5y agoArguably massive altruism by GitHub, yes - although equally the cost savings and benefits of the resulting software to an entire ecosystem of technology companies probably dwarf the GHA spend here. It also makes me curious: how does the spend on test and build infrastructure compare to the compensation that developers (in aggregate or individually) receive for working on these projects? (something is deeply, deeply weird about the economics of open source software, and I think we're likely to add more layers -- like sponsorship and free compute time -- before we eventually unpack it all and figure out what was really going on from first-principles)
