From a physical security perspective, I cannot recommend and emphasize enough having a fiber optic media converter between your network interface (cable modem, satellite, etc.) and your expensive and extensive network. The purpose is to isolate your expensive hardware from lightning-induced destruction. The cable modem and one of the media converters serve as "sacrificial anodes" in this setup. It ends up being much cheaper to replace just a cable modem and a single media converter instead of an entire network of devices.
- walterbell 5y agoAfter losing a cable modem and the connected NIC port to lightning in urban apartment, I installed a lightning suppressor / surge arrester with a replaceable gas discharge tube, on both the coax cable to the cable modem, and the ethernet cable to the modem. Since then, I've once replaced the coax-facing tube/fuse due to a surge, but the equipment has been fine. Spare fuses were back-ordered at Mouser, but arrived eventually.
- mongol 5y agoThat is a great point, but what about power? What do you recommend there?
- vorpalhex 5y agoSurge protector (high quality, insured) or UPS.
