I've just finished a network overhaul as well.
I used similar techniques, except I preferred not to use any external DNS server¹, so I hosted a recursive DNS server (bind9) on a small fanless server (apu2d4).
The DNS server can also block ads, similar to how pihole does it.
1. Why is everyone trusting cloudflare to centralize all their DNS queries? Even Firefox is migrating all their browsers to use them.
- SamuelAdams 5y agoPersonally I’m using cloud flare because there’s not a lot of options. The only other major one most tech enthusiasts know about is 8.8.8.8 and that’s owned by Google. It would be good if there were more players in this space. A nonprofit might help here too, like Mozilla. Maybe they can run a public DNS server.
- tallanvor 5y agoquad9 is run by a foundation. Most of it's donations come from corporate sponsors, but it's definitely a better option.
- justusthane 5y agoI think you might be kind of missing the point here—if you run your own recursive resolver, e.g. unbound, you’re not relying on any public DNS server.
