Blockchain based top level domain registration platform
- capitalstruggle 5y agoDomain Name Token (DNT), is a platform for the registration, identification, and management of top-level domain names on blockchain. DNT is created for those who are interested in owning and reselling domain names within the Ethereum Network as NFTs. Users can search for the desired domain name and domain availability including other domain suggestions will be listed. In case a domain name is taken, users can submit an offer for it, and DNT will try to pursue the existing owner of the domain to tokenize it, even if it’s not registered through the platform. DNT will pursue the existing owner without any fees while granting the chance for the new user to get the desired domain name. For each domain registered through DNT, along with the NFT representing the ownership of the domain, a community token will be minted and distributed to the user that gives access to a portion of all sales made through the platform.
- smt88 5y agoIt sounds like there's a layer of code that has to bridge the NFT with some registrar. How does that work? Isn't it centralized? It sounds like the NFT doesn't add any value here because DNS is centralized and so must this product be.
- verdverm 5y agoDNS is more like a cartel, much like BTC or Ethereum is in reality. DNS is actually one of the better distributed (technically) systems (thinking of this particular feature anyhow https://www.lifewire.com/dns-root-name-servers-3971336 https://www.lifewire.com/dns-root-name-servers-3971336)
- capitalstruggle 5y agoMost of NFTs can be considered to have a centralized part, the `function tokenURI(uint256 _tokenId) external view returns (string)` function of the ERC721 interface provides a URI to the meta information associated with the NFT, many NFTs also implementing a `function setBaseUri(uint256 _tokenId, string memory _baseUri)` which can change the source where the meta information is pulled from. Yes, DNS is centralized, the domains are kept by a centralized entity that obeys the contracts on top of which the platform runs. The created NFT is identifying the domain and the ownership of the domain, changing the nameservers of the domain must go through DNT and can only be done by the address that owns the NFT. Right now it uses partners like name.com, godaddy etc to register the domain, the plan is for DNT to become a registrar itself and give more options to the user, eventually connecting the centralized DNS with a decentralized dns service. The value added by NFT is the possibility of transferring the domain to another address without waiting the required 3 months that all registrars must obey before transferring the domain ownership. Also the NFT can be auctioned, not being parked on sedo or other aftermarket, but pointing to users nameservers while it is being auctioned. There is no rule that blockchain should be used only by fully decentralized services, centralized businesses can adopt the technology too.
- verdverm 5y agoHow does this interact with the existing registration, registrar, and the DNS lookup? For example, how is a .com managed?
- capitalstruggle 5y agoThe acquisition of the domain is done by the business behind the platform and provides a bridge from the NFT to the domain. Once the domain is acquired by the platform and the NFT is claimed by the user, all nameservers and domain registrant contact information can be changed with the NFT owner address signature, the backend of the service taking care of the updates on the domain side.
- bradwood 5y agoWhy not just unstoppabledomains.com?
- capitalstruggle 5y agoUnstoppable Domains provide their own tlds. Also, for the user to reach the content of the domain it must first install an extension that would instruct the browser to which IP to send the request. With DNT you can register a regular domain with tlds supported by all browsers directly as it follows the regular DNS.
