Intimacy doesn't imply that you have to do it with another human, it's just a feeling of a barrier being lowered for you that wouldn't be someone else. Petting a car is intimacy. I'm not sure it's a universal need but I think most scholars that study "mental health" from different perspectives agree that for virtually all humans being deprived of that leads to suffering.
