Same thing happened to me with Airbnb last year. They refused to refund me (apparently it was like a lottery, other's in similar situations were successful). I ended not getting any money back, and getting a nasty review on top for asking for it. Really made me realize AirBnb/VBRO have real downsides vs hotels, and made me try limit my use of those services. No way a reasonable hotel brand would allow this story to be written.
