It's primarily because I want things to consistently work as expected. Sure, macOS doesn't always work as expected, but compared to my experiences with various Linux distros, it does.
Others have mentioned the trackpad experience, and that's a thing, but not a deal breaker for me since I use the keyboard a lot.
Hardware quality is another issue, more important than the trackpad for me. MacBooks are built like tanks compared to most other laptops, and it's not difficult to keep one running well for 8+ years. In fact, I have a 2013 MacBook Air and a 2015 MacBook Pro, both of which are running as well as ever.
- kreetx 5y agoOther than the recent M1s don't the previous ones run linux? The mbp's made until 2015 sure do.
- binaryblitz 5y agoNo, they run MacOS (or OSX for older versions), a version of Unix. The M1s still run MacOS, just on a different type of processor hardware.
- onceiwasthere 5y agoI figure kreetx is referring to bootcamp'd intel Macs running full Linux.
- kreetx 5y agoYup (Though note that Bootcamp is a macOS app to install Windows only. For linux the process less GUI assisted (but still pretty straight-forward).)
- auslegung 5y agoIf you’re indicating I load a Linux distro on a MacBook, I did ask about that at the Apple store back in 2012 when I got my first MacBook, and the look on the “geniuses” faces were priceless. But otherwise no, I’m not interested because of my first point, namely that I want things to consistently work as expected.
- noahtallen 5y agoLinux support is pretty iffy on the 2015 - 2019 (chiclet keyboard) ones. I tried once, but driver support was the main problem. Things like keyboard/WiFi/trackpad (I forget exactly which) were broken without any straightforward solutions.
- sircastor 5y agoMy 2014 personal laptop continues to work really well, in spite of some drops and liquid spills. I do want to move to an Apple Silicon machine but I’m not sure I have a decent reason to.
