SF school board recall hits critical milestone to qualify for the ballot
- someonehere 5y agoGood. Those retired parents and community members standing outside of grocery stores, Peet’s/Starbucks, farmers markets deserve this after all of their hard work. Politics does not belong in public schools during a pandemic. The city attorney sued the board at one point demanding they produce a back to school plan last year. After a seven hour closed door school board session with their attorneys, their tone changed real quick after that meeting. SFUSD is not a Petri dish to experiment on kids with real world politics.

- gbronner 5y agoOne issue in SF is that the proportion of parents sending kids to public schools as a proportion of voters in these elections is very low. So you can run on a platform completely unrelated to education, win, and use it as a stepping stone to further office.
- diogenescynic 5y agoWe need to recall the DA… but the embarrassingly woke school board is a start. Especially the grifter who sued SF for $80m…
- throwawaysea 5y agoUnfortunately I hit a paywall. Is this about the board members who shut down the only school with merit based admissions, tried to ban the names of historical figures from schools, and posted racist things on social media?
- AareyBaba 5y agoYes. "While distance learning devastated many families, the board spent significant time and energy on renaming 44 schools, a decision later reversed, and ending the merit-based admission to academically elite Lowell High School." https://archive.is/yQoow https://archive.is/yQoow
- rayiner 5y agoOne of the people being recalled: https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-03-22/elected-leaders-call-for-san-francisco-school-board-member-to-resign-after-2016-racist-tweets https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-03-22/elected-... > In her Twitter thread, posted before she became a school board member, Collins said many Asian people do not talk about critical race theory and instead promote a “model minority” myth and use white supremacist thinking. > “Where are the vocal Asians speaking up against Trump? Don’t Asian Americans know they are on his list as well?” she tweeted. “Do they think they won’t be deported? profiled? beaten? Being a house n— is still being a n—. You’re still considered ‘the help.’ ” What’s remarkable about these tweets is that they’re not some off-color joke or mocking someone for superficial characteristics. They reflect prejudice against Asians directed at their culture—labeling the things Asian parents teach their kids “white supremacist.” I can’t think of anyone else who publicly attacked Asians in this way in recent memory. Collins invokes Trump, but to my recollection he never attacked Asians for their culture like Collins has done.
- forgingahead 5y agoI'm surprised that you've been downvoted - with no counter-argument to any of the very valid points you've made! These are disturbing traits of anyone, let along someone who is in a position of power in a school district. It's a pity people aren't calling out racism when these things happen.
- rayiner 5y agoAre you surprised though? Given what’s going on these days?
- random314 5y agoThere have been very public physical attacks on Asians in SF if you have been paying attention. Trump was also never recalled unlike this school board member. You have a consistent theme of using every opportunity to magnify bad actions by non Republican actors no matter how insignificant the person might be, discount the apologies etc. while downplaying Republican racism (ex Stephen Miller who wouldn't let a brown ass into this country if he could) and providing convoluted arguments to support blatantly antiscience stance taken by the Republican party. Its tiresome to see this shtick play out in every thread.
