I read John Carreyrou’s “Bad Blood” a while ago—it’s a fascinating book—and that sounds pretty consistent with how Balwani came across in the book: he was portrayed as an overbearing, arrogant idiot who abused employees. I don’t remember anything about abuse directed at Holmes.
The impression I had from the book, though, was that Holmes was vastly more intelligent and capable than Balwani. So I’m less than convinced that he was solely responsible for the malfeasance itself—he seemed like a dim-witted bully whose main purpose was providing money and connections, while Holmes did a lot of the strategizing.
I do agree, though, that painting him as a brutish manipulator sounds like a solid trial tactic.
