My default methodology is Product-First, but I’ve worked on some projects where I behaved Code-First. My absolute favorite thing is to solve customer problems with high quality engineering. There are some customers I did not want to help — because of personal indifference to the customers and their goals. I still wanted a paycheck so I dived deep into thinking about clever abstractions or tried to cram in some new technology. I was engineering for engineering’s sake. I’m lucky now to be working on projects and teams I care about, and I think first about what type of problem I should be solving, and then I think about what type of engineering would best solve that problem.
