Meta observation: The top two comments are indicative of quality drift in HN. The first one, from 3pt14159 is inquisitive, interested, and humble. The second one, from the aptly named garbagetime, is dismissive and rude. Let's all please try to be more like the former, and less like the latter.

How many posts were there at the time of writing? Did your comment influence the subsequent voting? Would garbagetime have been naturally downvoted if given enough time? Is hacker news actually declining in quality, or is it just tendency to favor good things when remembering the past? Does any of this matter at all?
