Now we have electric unicycles, which seem 100x cooler than the Segway. But they also seem to take 100x longer to learn to ride and -- judging from YT videos -- they're 100x more likely to send you to the emergency room.
- timonoko 5y agoElectric unicycles came first already in 1970's. It had a mechanical gyro from airplane and analog circuitry. The Segway was totally lame concept and doomed by those who knew things. One plan was to add some lateral correction to the unicycle to aid learning and safety. But it never happened for some reason.
- smorgusofborg 5y agoIt would be interesting to see the statistics. My impression is that complex to learn things like unicycles have a high frequency but a large variance of injuries while "easy" techs like Segways and 4 wheelers have amateurs killing or paralyzing themselves right away.
- hasbot 5y agoI taught myself to ride an electric unicycle in about three hours spread across maybe a dozen sessions. I jumped off a few times but never crashed. In my experience electric unicycles are as safe as a bicycle though I admit I never ride faster than 20 mph.
