How the ‘art of the insane’ inspired surrealists and was twisted by the Nazis
- zdragnar 5y agoIf the horror of WW1 (machine guns, mustard gas, etc) was the result of scientific advancement and modern thought, then breaking expectations and conjuring nonsense was the dada movements response- humanity needed a mental reset. I hadn't heard specifically of the clinically insane's artwork as being so important to the transition from dada to surrealism, though there wasn't really always a good way to tell the two apart.
