Weight loss via exercise harder for obese people, data suggests
- neom 5y agoHomie doing his Launch HN last week using GLP-1 RA checks out. This is basically exactly what he said. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28257352 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28257352
- WheelsAtLarge 5y agoMy feeling is that exercising to lose weight,if you're over weight, is mostly false unless you combine it with a reduction in food intake. I've known plenty of people, including myself, that have gone on an exercise plan and have lost very little weight. One of the reasons, in addition to what this article points out, is that exercise increases your appetite, something that few people point out when they talk about using exercise for weight loss. But yet I've seen plenty of people lose weight once they have had surgery to reduce the amount of food they eat even with no exercise. We need to point out that exercise is important but it's not the magic that will cure obesity. It all comes down to the number of calories you eat each day.
- racnid 5y agoWhats the adage? You can't out train a bad diet...
- megameter 5y agoI find that a lot of fitness advice for the "ordinary overweight" adapts something from either athletic training, or physical therapy. Dietary advice likewise tends towards weighty, religious entreaties like "avoid all carbs". These things do not slot into a modern lifestyle easily - what we need a lot of is "passive fitness" measures akin to the "take the stairs instead of the elevator" or "bike instead of using your car" advice. When the availability is good, on average you end up taking the healthy option more often. But, to get there we will have to have a built environment and social norms that support it. The trends have been positive, but much more is still possible. "physique = fitness" is a particularly bad normalized metric(with understandable origins), and we should be encouraging people to use a real fitness test to judge themselves.
- paulmendoza 5y agoYou cant exercise away a bad diet and too many carbs. You can eat 500 calories incredibly fast compared to how much exercise you need. Just don’t eat. One meal a day or OMAD. It isn’t that hard. Anytime I find myself getting a little chunky I do this and it works. Your body doesn’t need to eat 3 times per day. I always fast until 12 pm. If you really want to lose weight fast for a full 36 or 48 hours. It has been shown to have many beneficial effects when you go into ketosis.
- nzmsv 5y agoHmm, the weight loss definitely happens, but I wouldn't call it easy. Non-stop headache, complete inability to focus, and terrible crankiness. At some point one starts to wonder if it's better to just be chubby :)
