Thank you, I appreciate your response. I agree that establishing an LLC is great to cover most risk and definitely on my todo list.
But do you know of any resources for learning the other legal aspects of development besides software licenses? For example, I never heard about legal insurance for developers before.
I should had worded my question better but software licensing in specific is the only thing I'm very comfortable with. It's everything else related to development that I struggle with. (for example, terms of services. Can you moderate user generated content without unnecessary risk? Seems like the publisher vs platform isn't even settled rn with big companies)
- giantg2 5y agoI meant general liability insurance for the LLC. I think we would need to know specifics to really weigh in. I still think if you look up multiple resources for the topic you want to cover, then you can get sufficient advice. Most things can be covered in a license/eula and if structured right, will give you a lot of protection. This shouldn't be very expensive to have a lawyer set up if you can't find one of the standard ones that work for you. If you're really that concerned with the minor details and edge cases, then I assume you also have retained a personal lawyer for all the legal risks you face as a regular citizen. If you haven't, then try to apply that same logic here - that you aren't doing anything that risky and can follow basic advice or best practices. You probably aren't a high risk target (personally or company) unless you are doing sketchy things, pissing people off, or are high profile wealthy.
