Software for devs is also difficult:
The biggest problem I ran into as a dev trying to use a new m1 is docker. It needs firewalls disabled and things. I just don’t want to go there.
Java was something that started working well quite quickly, though.
Smaller irritants that remain include the hassle of trying to get ssh credentials to stick, trying to turn off start-on-power and that safari cant add specific cross-site cookie exceptions (which means I have to keep logging into various work sites that use a third party 2fa).
The m1 is fast. Really fast. It is also silent. Silence is absolutely the best thing about it. It makes you realize how horrid every other computer is.
- Telemakhos 5y agoI've taken to using nativefier to build Electron apps for all my work-specific sites. That way each site has its own cache and cookies sandbox, and I don't have to mix work sites with general browsing under the same security policy. Plus, putting the nativefier apps in ~/Applications automatically adds them to Launchpad, which I've set always to show in the control strip on the touchbar: when I want to launch a worksite, it's just a matter of reaching up past the delete key, hitting the touchbar, and typing the first letters of the nativefier app name for that site.
- simondotau 5y agoSK Hynix, Micron and Samsung approves of this.
- gumby 5y agoBYW you may find it faster to press command space for the same result without moving your hand off the home row.
- Telemakhos 5y agoI've assigned that to switching keyboards, which I do hundreds of tines a day.
