Don’t forget that the US democracy started with a religious fundamentalist regime.
- tempay 5y agoI have no ties to the US and very little knowledge of it's history but I thought the ideas around the separation of church and state can be traced back to the founding of the US?
- mc32 5y agoIt’s a ridiculous assessment and it’s comparing XVIII c. US with the modern day. That would be like someone bringing up some deficiency in women’s rights in the US today and then retort by comparing it to women’s rights in 1700s somewhere else. No, we live today.
- luckylion 5y agoThe point was that it started as one. I read that as "even if it starts as a fundamentalist regime, it can develop into something else."
- mc32 5y agoI would disagree on the assertion that it was fundamentalist. Compared to the places they came from, they were pretty open and indeed ensured that there was separation between state and religion, unlike many other places at the time where there was an intricate relationship between the two.
- scns 5y agoThe only country i know of, where church and state are actually separate is France.
