Facebook should be regulated like a utility and banned from banning anything.
- verdverm 5y agoI used to think this, but there are some serious downsides. Too many bad actors who would take advantage of it. I don't use FB, so I'm not sure you can call it a utility anyhow. which path is the least likely to enable society to self-destruct? Perhaps covid could be a good analogy and inspiration for how to deal with social media. Social distancing, vaccines, try to get the transmission rate down...
- spiderice 5y ago> I don't use FB, so I'm not sure you can call it a utility anyhow I'm not sure this logic really holds up..
- verdverm 5y agoSocial media is different from a utility, a publisher, and a public space. It has its own uniqueness and nuances. Trying to shoehorn it into existing frameworks is not sufficient to solve the problems.
- Grakel 5y agoBad actors use TV news, bad actors use movies, the mail, pen and paper, guns. Stop trying to parent people, even if they are mostly dumb, they have the right to be.
- verdverm 5y agoNot sure how the jump to parenting follows... I'm more advocating for slowing the viral factor of content spread rather than eliminating it. Some content will always need to be removed. How much leeway does a company get to choose who can participate? Does the monetization model effect this?
