I think that with the ubiquity of American media, most cultures around the world would not mistake any non-verbal communication that a US citizen might make. Not all, but surely a great many. I don't know, I have never traveled abroad, but I do know that American movies and tv are everywhere in the world. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.
