I think what is being professed here is that developers should understand something about the ops side of the fence. They should be able to feel that pain. Likewise, I think operations personnel should know something about the dev side of the house. They should be able to feel that pain. In this way, the devs can work better with the ops, and the ops can work better with the devs. And we get DevOps. That should be the goal, anyway.
