Its interesting how Redis-the-company isn't actually founded and owned by Salvatore Sanfilippo, the creator of Redis. The "from the founders" message we read isn't from the founders of Redis, its from the founders of a company that is renaming itself to Redis. They start a company to piggy-back Redis, eventually hired Salvatore as a coder for a while, and now are naming themselves just plain 'Redis'.
Its interesting to contrast this with how other companies in the space are built by the founders trying to profit from the success of the open-source project they founded. Often, those companies don't have the name of the open-source project, though; I'm thinking e.g. DataBricks for Spark.
- mythz 5y agoRedis Ltd. may not be founded by Salvatore but the governance and direction of Redis has gone ahead with his blessing given he asked for them to take over maintenance of Redis [1] who have been a long time sponsor of Redis paying Salvatore's full-time salary for several years to work on it. Given his next adventure was writing a novel [2] I'd imagine he was compensated enough for handing over Redis's trademarks, website and project development that he's been able to pursue his other interests with his free time which IMO is a successful outcome for having produced commercially successful software.
