are they burning wood chips and painting themselves green ?
- eesmith 5y agoIf I read it correctly, the iron ore is reduced using hydrogen created via electrolysis, and the steel is created by electric arc furnace.
- guerby 5y agoIn the rechargenews article they mention the need to have lots of renewable electricity to really get rid of fossil fuel: "But to produce sufficient hydrogen to make SSAB’s current iron and steel production fossil-free would require 15 terawatt hours of fossil-free electricity. For SSAB be able to source those volumes, Sweden must first speed up and simplify the permitting procedures for the expansion of its power grid and electricity production, Vattenfall said."
- eesmith 5y agoFWIW, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Sweden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Sweden says Sweden added 20 TWh of wind in the last decade, so doubling that doesn't sound extraordinary. To get back to tsjq's comment, fossil and biofuel is only about 20 TWh out of about 150TWh of electrical production in Sweden. It's therefore likely the majority of this electricity came from hydro and nuclear, and unlikely to come from "wood chips".
