The author fails to mention the risk of children spreading Covid to everyone else, and seems to think that a few dead children (and uncounted adults) is fine as long as the rest keep up with the arbitrary academic progress schedule.
- AndrewBissell 5y ago> The author fails to mention the risk of children spreading Covid to everyone else Probably because "everyone else" has had access to vaccines for months, and is not entitled to have children's educations and lives wrecked in order to reduce the spread of an endemic respiratory virus. This is basically Denmark's position at this point: https://www.thelocal.dk/20210804/why-rising-covid-infections-wont-lead-to-tougher-national-restrictions-in-denmark/ https://www.thelocal.dk/20210804/why-rising-covid-infections... > seems to think that a few dead children ... is fine as long as the rest keep up with the arbitrary academic progress schedule Hundreds of children have died every year during influenza season for our entire lives. The death rate from Covid is not appreciably worse. Did you not advocate for masking or school shutdowns in prior years because you just didn't care about those dead kids?
- stevenalowe 5y agoYou misunderstood: “Everyone else” in this context means everyone, including fellow students, not just those that were eligible for the vaccine. You also misunderstand the death rate, deaths/infections is what matters, not deaths/population
- AndrewBissell 5y agoDeaths/infection is no more concerning for children for Covid than it is for influenza. The only people ineligible for the vaccine are the immunocompromised (whom we have never gone to such lengths to protect as mandating masks or flu shots) and children under 12, who are not at serious risk from Covid infection.
- stevenalowe 5y agoI admire your agility in missing/ignoring the point - the chance of death for children under 12 is NOT ZERO, and every infection provides another opportunity for mutation and contagion. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/09/health/coronavirus-children-delta.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/09/health/coronavirus-childr... The CDC recommends that children 6 months and older get an influenza vaccine every year - but testing is still ongoing for the covid vaccine clearly you do not care about unvaccinated adults either "they had their chance so f*ck 'em if they die now" ah...I glanced at your comment history - sorry for engaging with an anti-vax troll, folks
- AndrewBissell 5y ago> the chance of death for children under 12 is NOT ZERO The chance of death for children under 12 from all sorts of things is "NOT ZERO" ... drowning, for instance, kills many more children than Covid and we don't make them wear lifejackets everywhere or even when they're near large bodies of water. Many of them have had their swimming lessons canceled to "keep them safe" from Covid though! > every infection provides another opportunity for mutation and contagion The virus is endemic, it is going to mutate and continue spreading in the population regardless of how many people receive the vaccines. This idea we're going to reach Zero Covid through any means other than natural immunity for a virus with animal reservoirs, a large unvaccinated population in the developing world, and non-sterilizing vaccines, has no scientific basis or precedent.
