That is completely ridiculous students will also lose access to the "campus intranet network".
- Arnt 5y agoYes, no internet for them until they either fill out the form or fill out the other form. This seems like an effective, if harsh, way to make students show up in the right office with the right form. I say that as a former student, if you see what I mean. So my question is: For which class of forms do you think this is "completely ridiculous" and for which is it acceptable?
- NoPicklez 5y agoMy gripe isn’t about the form, the article says it will fine students and “will also lose access to Wi-Fi and the campus intranet network if they fail to to get vaccinated by Sept. 14”. I’m all for vaccines, but fining people over $2k per semester for not getting a vaccine is ludicrous.
- Arnt 5y agoThat's careless writing (or reading). Elsewhere the article says clearly that what's required is to either get vaccinated or apply for an exemption.
- hansvm 5y ago...and if those things don't happen the student will be fined $2k per semester because the university has unilaterally decided they have the power to give people arbitrary fines just because those people are buying a service from them.
- Arnt 5y agoEven if you think that fighting the university's general principle is right, then do you think this is the right issue to pick? This is the right hill to die on? https://twitter.com/RepJackKimble/status/1416766680194289672 https://twitter.com/RepJackKimble/status/1416766680194289672 If you fight for a just cause and you choose your examples and tactics such that you sound like a twitter parody account, you're going to lose.
- hansvm 5y agoWhat on earth are you going on about?
- Arnt 5y agoOK, let me try again. If your viewpoint is that the university is acting improperly and should not impose fines and/or block network access, then the next question is whether this particular instance of the university's general policy is a good example to choose for a protest. And my answer is no. When 94% have complied already, then it's likely that most of the students (who are most of the relvant public) will consider a protest as stupid as that repjacktrimble tweet. And if the university's next rule is less widely accepted, then the perceived stupidity of this protest harms the protest against that next rule.
- NoPicklez 5y agoSorry, the article clearly says the following two things. "sent an email to students who have failed to comply with its vaccination policy, advising them they will face weekly fees until they either get their shots or apply for an exemption." So students will be fined up to around 2k per semester if they are not vaccinated. Then "Students will also lose access to Wi-Fi and the campus intranet network if they fail to to get vaccinated by Sept. 14, the school said." Then in addition to the fines, students will also lose access to the wifi and intranet.
