Adam Curtis picks 10 films that capture the mood of their times
- silisili 5y agoWeird to see Uncut Gems there. Anecdotally, that seems to be one of the most divisive movies in recent years. Everyone I mention it to either loved it or hated it, with nobody I know saying 'it was just okay.' Personally, I absolutely detest it.
- sharken 5y agoIn total agreement here, Uncut Gems ranks as one of the few movies i have been unable to watch until the end. Anchorman is another "not that great movie", but i suppose it's due to not thinking Will Ferrell is funny or interesting. So I'd rather spend time going through the movies on the list "Top 10 Movies That Mess with Your Mind" https://entertainment.time.com/2010/07/16/top-10-movies-that-mess-with-your-mind/slide/all/ https://entertainment.time.com/2010/07/16/top-10-movies-that...
- randomhodler84 5y agoIMHO Will Ferrell is one of the funniest humans on the planet. His one liners become memes for years. He is beloved and considered a comedic legend — all without being offensive. Would you indulge us to whom you do find funny?
- sharken 5y agoFor starters Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Andy Samberg, Kevin Hart and Jackie Chan to name a few. I consider them all to be funnier than Will Ferrell, but personal taste is highly subjective.
- imbnwa 5y agoI thought it was a good reminder that Adam Sandler can act (also see P.T. Anderson's Punch Drunk Love, admittedly one of my favorite movies), but as a whole "it was just okay". The directors' previous film, Good Time, with Robert Pattinson, was waaaaaaay better, even more claustrophobic and frenetic in how it circles the drain.
- imbnwa 5y agoWhen I saw Starship Troopers in theaters as a pre-teen, I was super pumped about fighting bugs as I left the theatre with my then friend. Funny how my perspective changed as I got older. I thought he'd mentioned Anchorman cause Ferrell's gimmick for a good minute in the late 00s/early 2010s was parodying these traditionally masculine, patriarchal roles with his emotional manchild schitck that so many have seemingly derived their acts from (Tim Robinson and Eric André come to mind) and shortly after, or perhaps concurrently, the new wave of feminism took hold.
