Spanish village tells tourists to suck up roosters and braying donkeys
- jeffrallen 5y agoMy village has the same poster, in rural French Switzerland. Long live the roosters and hens who give us rich hidden egg yolks, the sounds of cow bells attached to cows fed only grass to make Gruyere, and the rumble of combines rolling through town, going out to fetch next winter's warm oats.
- UglyToad 5y agoThe roosters here start at between 3 and 4am and have episodes of crowing through till 6-7pm, I detest these creatures. Best I can tell it's a method of communicating/monitoring out of line of sight or in foliage since they seem to wait for the response before going again, get 2 in reasonable proximity and the cacophony is enough to make zoom calls untenable. I'm only slightly joking when I say I'm considering starting eating chicken again to cause maximum suffering to their species.
- yellowapple 5y agoMeanwhile, as a born-and-raised ruralite now living in a city, I'm much more bothered by upstairs neighbors and loud car noises at night than I ever was by livestock noises - only possible exception being the time I tried raising pygmy goats for 4H, but that was more a "what the fuck y'all want now?" kind of annoyance than them actually keeping me awake. I guess if you're used to one sort of noise, any other sort of noise will feel more alien.
- cafard 5y agoMy wife used to have meetings in New York, and for reasons that seemed adequate then we would stay at a hotel in the 50s, where the floor never seemed high enough to set away from dumpsters squealing on the street and compressors running on roofs. Once we moved to a higher floor, then thought we'd left something in the old room. The security guy who let me to look around said that as a born New Yorker he had had trouble sleeping in the quiet of an army base in the southwest.
- pvaldes 5y agoYep, we are terrible :-) I see that the guardian invented the part about braying donkeys, but well, is the guardian talking about Spain, so passing a distorted image is expected. They are so clueless as always. This is a joke obviously, but is surfing in the same wave that the french government started in January when they passed a new law to protect legally the sound of roosters. Ribadesella has a part that is a small city with a beach and a port, and also some rural areas around. Having a donkey or a cow walking by the street in the middle of the city is definitely not expected. You will hear lots of gulls, lots of people and some cars. But If you are hosted in a rural house near Ribadesella, expect exactly that. A rural lodge. Most probably a modern building clean and with gorgeous views and exactly (exactly) the same things that you would find in the countryside in England. All except the kitchen, that is excessive, and clearly better.
