I don't think so, it doesn't really need to "analyze" your messages to do preview urls, show videos... Those are more like frontend stuff IMO

- robertoandred 5y agoNo more frontend than running a basic subject recognition on a photo.
- blitzar 5y agoA bit like on-device machine learning features, like object detection in images and video, language analysis, and sound classification?
- robertoandred 5y agoYup. Apple made a recognition model around sexually explicit images and locally runs opted-in child accounts' images against it: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/vision/training_a_create_ml_model_to_classify_flowers https://developer.apple.com/documentation/vision/training_a_...
- blitzar 5y agoFunily enough my quote was from their on device machine learning api released in 2017 - https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/api/ https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/api/
- whydoineedthis 5y agoI don't think it reports those links back to big brother though. Keen difference.
- tpush 5y agoI doesn't do that with sexually explicit images on iMessage either.
- josteink 5y agoAnd how will you know?
- whydoineedthis 5y agoThe rest of the csam monitoring does. And nice that you abuse your karma to downvote people who don't agree with you.
- tpush 5y agoThere is no 'rest of CSAM monitoring'. The CSAM stuff is totally separate from the iMessage stuff we're discussing here. > And nice that you abuse your karma to downvote people who don't agree with you. I did not downvote you; not that you be able to tell if I did, anyway.
- whydoineedthis 5y agoLiterally the first sentence under the article headline "More than 90 policy and rights groups ask company to abandon plans for scanning phones of adults for images of child sex abuse.". Maybe YOU weren't talking about csam, but everyone else was including the article author, if you even read it.
- tpush 5y agoThis particular thread and your own comments in this thread are about iMessage, with your comment implying it reports sexually explicit images to "big brother". I pointed out that's not true (that's probably why other people downvoted your comment) and that you're apparently confusing the iMessage stuff with the CSAM scanning stuff which, as I already said, are completely separate from each other.
- 0x000000001 5y agobut they're literally one if-statement away from doing so
- UncleMeat 5y agoBut people are mad precisely because the CSAM scanning is being done as "frontend stuff".

- josteink 5y agoAnd then automatically reported to some backend, which reports to the police. That’s a wee bit different from showing YouTube previews imo.
