Cute Experiment Reveals How Your Cat Probably Wants Its Meals Served
- aksss 5y agoTL;DR - when presented with food in a puzzle, and food on a plate, cats prefer to eat food off a plate rather than solve a puzzle for their food. [not really sure how such an experiment is "cute", btw - seems pretty pedestrian]. Apparently most animals, from dogs to birds to giraffes, prefer to work for their food. No explanation for this behavior of cats is given, though a few speculative ideas are put forth and discarded. My own personal anecdata is that cats really like predictable food availability, and the more predictable, the better - as in, not having to ask for it. Timed food release systems are pretty awesome for this, rather than just having the never-ending bowl of food. It's remarkable how on point cats are with the timing, considering my cat wears her watch upside down and as far as I know can't read roman numerals anyway. I interpret that as worrying about food = anxiety for cats. Thus, reading the article about their preference for not solving puzzles gets tinted by my experience and I think, well it makes sense that they don't want voluntary anxiety. It's not a fun puzzle, which I imagine for a dog it may be. Who knows..?
