It's counterintuitive, and I also thought like that. Because there is more choice, and diversity people are more acceptable of accepting a less than ideal fit jobs. In US, IT workplaces, and especially dotcoms are all very much alike, thus people put much more effort to fit into the system as alternatives aren't going to be much different.
