They should have made the battery pack swapable at a sub-module level at least. As should every other new EV producer for cars, bikes & scooters. Having removable battery packs with user-replaceable cells is the only way avoid high costs & lock-ins. It'd be like going back to the OEM authorised repair days of today.
- brianwawok 5y agoTesla doesn't want anyone else swapping batteries into their cars. When a Tesla bursts into flame due to a bad battery bought on eBay, which do you think makes the news. Tesla car bursts into flames while parked in garage or Offbrand battery purchased on eBay bursts into flames It makes 1000% sense to not support this. And I bought a Tesla knowing full well anything past tires/brakes is going to require Tesla to be my repairshop of choice. I can't shop it around the same I can my Honda. And the tradeoff was worth it to me. Early signs point to the battery lasting 200k miles, which should outlive the car.
- nickik 5y agoSo you are basically saying they should make every car significantly worse in terms of weight and driving performance. Despite 95% or more will never swap out the battery. A fully integrated cell-to-pack architecture where the pack is fully integrated and structural is clearly the best solution for a car. Otherwise you are just having millions of car driving around far heavier and less efficient then they should be.
- vb6sp6 5y ago> So you are basically saying they should make every car significantly worse in terms of weight and driving performance This assumes it would be impossible for telsa engineers to design around modular cells. And I don't think that is a fair assessment
- nickik 5y agoThere is a fundamental problem that these are highly complex highly integrated system. The cell is totally structural and glued together in a sandwich that is literally as hard as a brick. You simply can not replace individual cells or individual models. The level of replacement is a the whole battery pack. Anything else makes very little sense. Your model is basically, putting a box in a box in box and then adding a huge amount of complexity on all layers to make it possible to cheaply disassembly. You are gone have a far heavier car, that is far, far more complex to build and far more prone to actually breaking.
