  so this guy was a software engineer and then he became a dentist, and he decided to do everything stallman style, designing all the dental software and hardware himself on Linux from scratch. He wrote drivers for the xray machines??!!

    OP specifically mentions the sensor, so I'd speculate they use an interface to download data which is different from the control mechanism.
