Twitter Picks Crypto Developer Jay Graber to Run Decentralized Social Media Wing
- dannyobrien 5y agoI think it’s incorrect to view Jay as an exclusively crypto/blockchain person — or at least not in the way that many in HN think of that space. They’ve also been a familiar participant in the wider P2P, privacy and civil liberties space; I’ve bumped into them in the secure scuttlebutt, ActivityPub and IPFS worlds too. It’s a good choice of leader for Bluesky.
- swiley 5y agoI'm pro crypto as a financial tool but everything that uses it for social media seems like a mess. We already have Mastodon and that works very well without any crypto nonsense. I wonder if this is twitter's attempt to make decentralized platforms look unusable in order to drive people away from them.

You can thank Vitalik for saying he sees utility for social media on the blockchain in his july talk[0]… I'd rather see indie game devs use nfts for merc/skins/etc in their applications than social media onchain. - riffic 5y agoEEE / NIH etc. Not seeing much right now that leads me to be anything other than skeptical about the affair. Like, Twitter, Inc had 13 years to play some sort of role over at the W3C when ostatus, pump.io, and AP were being written.
- riffic 5y agocopy and paste from the other Twitter/Bluesky thread: it'd be a sign of good faith if Jay/the team could at least adopt a presence on the existing decentralized/federated social networking system recommended by the W3C. Like, at the minimum they can stand up a WordPress blog and use a plugin to do so from their own domain. I'm not holding my breath in the meantime.
