Yeah, I'd like to know about fractal geometry too :) Sadly not in my field, but good luck! To help with book learning, try adding interactivity back in, e.g. by writing a short blog post on each small topic you want to learn. This will switch on the bits of your brain that like getting stuff done, and also challenge you to understand things more fully; having to explain something to someone else really points out what you didn't know that you don't know.
