Well, browsers do a very sensible thing of attempting to anything that is a valid domain names. For everything else, including undelegated (and therefore unresolvable) top-level domains get passed on as search queries. Forwarding as much traffic to search engines is how they make money, after all. If you don’t like it, stick to valid domains.
