I am baffled & shocked how the US gov't failed this badly. They publicly said the Taliban were going to take back control, why were they counting on it taking three months? We had already been there for 20 years, why not spend 6 more months evacuating everyone who wants / needs to leave in an organized fashion. It genuinely feels like the US gov't is seeding the country for the Taliban to commit another act of terrorism so we can 'renew' the war. Everyone knew the Taliban were going to take back over when the US left, so why did no country seem to do anything about it by orderly evacuating, putting travel advisories, etc. It just seems so weird that no country can / would preemptively declare a looming human rights crisis and begin processing them as refugees before it spiraled into a true crisis.
