Ask HN: What are you working on this weekend?
Show us what you've been working on this weekend!
- firedating 5y agoI've spent 9 hours coding firedating.me (my hobby project and community of people interested in FIRE (Financial Independence / Early Retirement) looking for friends and a partner). Features: 1) Searching for multiple specific genders. Previously this was only 'one gender' or 'any'. However, often people want to search for 'one gender' + Non-Binary. Unfortunately, the code didn't support the new functionality well, so I had to refactor a lot (especially tests). Now it should be much easier to maintain though. 2) Searching by children preferences (whether their matches have and want children). This just reused logic from (1). Overall, it is surprising how much complexity there can be in a dating site :)
- ambivalents 5y agoThis is awesome, you seem to be in touch with what your users want and then work to deliver it (whereas with many side projects I see it's more the developer building exactly what they want). I wish you much success!
- firedating 5y agoThank you! These days I am doing my best to know what users want, but it gets harder and harder. Previously I could talk to 1-2 users and already get a lot of insight. Nowadays there are often conflicting requests or just too many of them. I think this is the price of growth. Still didn't figure out how to scale this well. The stats are public, by the way, https://firedating.me/open/ https://firedating.me/open/ :)
- Dracophoenix 5y agoAre you advertising this on Reddit? If not r/financialindependence would probably be interested in this.
- firedating 5y agoI wouldn't call it 'advertising', but I do mention it in FIRE subreddits every now and then. r/financialindependence is (understandably) super strict about self promotion, but the existing users mention the site in comments there. Thank you!
- tmaly 5y agoTrying to get panels up for French style wall onlays. Also trying to squeeze in time to write a script for my coding for kids series.

- aaronchall 5y agoI have been trying to get emacs set up how I like it based on my prior experience with spacemacs, using the highest level config settings, with the goal of having the most powerful IDE and document generator I can get while writing as little elisp as possible (by using `M-x customize` and `M-x list-packages` only thus far). I was very excited when, for the first time ever, late last night, I created a Haskell code block, did C-c, C-c, and got a hello world to show up! I have never been able to get ob-haskell to work before, and I have been fighting it off and on for years, using the same tactics.
- margor 5y agoWriting article about and working on deploying k3s for my home server. https://flicksfix.com/posts/k3s-for-home-server-the-easy-way-pt-1/ https://flicksfix.com/posts/k3s-for-home-server-the-easy-way...
- c_ris 5y agoI've been trying to find a good way of integrating a nice language selection dialogue for my website running Wordpress with WPML. Why? - Because if I let the website choose the default language, it doesn't seem to work for search engine crawlers.
- nassimsoftware 5y agoI just finished my Video Game Geoguesser : https://nassimsoftware.github.io/vggeoguesser https://nassimsoftware.github.io/vggeoguesser
- kirubakaran 5y agoOptimizing some SQL queries for https://histre.com/ https://histre.com/ Just managed to reduce the time taken by one query (run by a cron job for this feature: https://histre.com/features/share-hackernews-upvotes/ https://histre.com/features/share-hackernews-upvotes/) from 43s to less than 0.1s
- DrNuke 5y agoRevising the 25th instalment (and the last one, finally!) of my booklet series, made of specialised literature reviews summaries for the general public. This one is about Fashion.
- _448 5y agoReading about Object Algebra!
- mikewarot 5y agoHelping a friend troubleshoot a Rockwell-Collins KWM-2a SSB radio transceiver. High voltage, tubes, many, many factory revisions. I've learned not to freak out when the magic smoke lets loose. I've also learned how horrible Silver-Mica capacitors are. I invented a new troubleshooting technique to track them down. Any resistors in series with them and high voltage should have zero volts across them, if there's voltage across the resistor, there's current, and a leaky cap. You have to first pull out all the tubes, but leave B+ on.
- mikewarot 5y agoIt didn't help that the 455 Khz mechanical filter was shot, which almost never happens. It's all working now!
- burntoutfire 5y agoVoxel engine for my voxel-based strategy game.
- DataCrayon 5y agoI did some clean-up on Plotapi (https://plotapi.com https://plotapi.com) in preparation for the next data visualisation I introduce... it was mostly some improvements around caching and compression. REST Client plugin for VSCode has been useful for testing this! Some users are making requests up to 20MB - so the next step will be to compress payloads on the sender side!
- mrhichem 5y agoI've made minor GUI and perfs updates on my options screener tool. https://www.freeoptionscreener.com https://www.freeoptionscreener.com next steps is adding some screener presets and then I will need to contact some options trading youtube gurus to try the tool looking for feedback.
- visox 5y agoautomention.com Another side project of mine. Can post comments on reddit in your name. Should bé better than Google Ads.
- brtkdotse 5y agoSo basically a spam bot?
- Jeremy1026 5y agoLooks more like a deep search tool than straight spam bot. The way the website steps read currently it sounds like once it finds matching comments, you have to manually reply.
- sircastor 5y agoMy Halloween haunt. We’re going to have singing pumpkins that light up according to syllables. We have 10 electric pumpkins that I still need to figure out how to waterproof (they’re plastic, but the shell isn’t water tight). I’m in the middle of sequencing “This is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
- akshaynathr 5y agoI am building a social network similar to linkedIn for artists as a hobby project. I don't have a demo yet. I hope to complete an MVP in couple of weeks.
