I believe you're identifying simple and fundamental, which is risky, because it's not explicit for whom the code is supposed to be simple (reader or writer).
Writing good code for a reader is about abstracting to the fundamental level of atomic logic. But this requires quite a lot of practice and experience, not to mention discipline.
If the code is _simple_ from the writer's point of view it's probably filled with tacit assumptions (future breakage) and lazy decision made to get where this thing just works.
Good code requires insight and planning. _My code_ is written from the top of my head to solve a specific issue. I'm an amateur in programming with a long enough academic education to know in detail how I suck :)
If asked I'd probably say I write simple code. But I don't necessarily intend well structured and stable, just that it was straightforward for me at the time of writing it (+ n days).
