I agree that understanding an Open Source project without proper documentation is really hard. For the same reason we are trying to create this site (http://www.codemaps.org/s/Lucene_Core http://www.codemaps.org/s/Lucene_Core) to document open source projects. This is still in beta and we would be glad to hear your thoughts on it.
