Funny that Facebook had no issue with Cambridge Analytica until Cambridge Analytica became an issue. Let's also ignore the fact that Cambridge Analytica was a private foreign company illicitly compiling data to influence US elections. But yes by all means, it's no different than a research group and volunteers studying an algorithm. You definitely nailed it.
- ergocoder 5y agoThey learned from the mistake and now doesn't want to make the same mistake. Sounds fair though. How do you guarantee it is just a research group? Didn't Cambridge analytics look innocent as well in the beginning?
- jimsimmons 5y agoFB’s response to imagine the worst and outright ban is awfully convenient. Do you really think FB is so on top of their user’s privacy otherwise?
- pptr 5y agoSecurity and privacy are all about imagining the worst. Anything that can be exploited will be exploited eventually.
- ergocoder 5y agoNo, but that doesn't mean they have to allow random research group to crawl their data. Again a mistake happened in the past. FB learns to not trust random research group upfront.
- shapefrog 5y ago> Cambridge Analytica Looks a bit like they selected a name hinting to a connection with a world class university.
- iratic0 5y agoIt should be remembered that the Obama administration carried out the same type of research as Cambridge Analytica to influence the 2012 election. If this research is going to be criticised, it should be done evenly, not just when it's politically convenient.
