My dirty software engineering secret is that I don't know how to use vim. Like at all. I've been a developer for over 10 years at this point. The only thing I remember is that some combo of hitting the escape key and typing :wq gets me out of it. When I get a new machine I have to immediately change the default editor for git so I don't get totally stuck if I need to edit a commit message. I also use a GUI text editor for git... I really appreciate that nano has it's shortcuts written on the screen for me to use. It's my CLI text editor of choice for that reason.
