My hypothesis about why rich people moving to NZ is that it's a mix of hype, NZ climate and the relative isolation. The latter is one of the most important. It's pretty hard to get to NZ. The distance itself will basically guarantee you won't get overrun by climate change refugees. Unlike the mainland US or Europe.
- scrollaway 5y agoRight but the distance has far more disadvantages in a crisis, especially for such a small country.
- rootusrootus 5y agoIs NZ capable of self-sufficiency, though? The same distance that makes it hard to be overrun with refugees also makes it difficult to resupply.
- akomtu 5y agoThe rich are very mobile: they can hop on a jet in their garage and be anywhere the same day. They aren't bound to their houses, like middle class.
- scrollaway 5y agoWhich makes the idea of "moving to New Zealand" kind of ridiculous. The world's a big place. There's much, much better spots to be at than the middle of nowhere, especially if you have money and/or the ability to create large structures around where you live.
